Competency and Sanity Evaluations in Texas
Forensic Psychological Evaluations for Criminal Court

I provide court-ordered Competency to Stand Trial and Criminal Responsibility (Insanity) Evaluations for adult and juvenile defendants across the state of Texas. These evaluations help the court make informed legal decisions regarding a defendant’s mental state and their ability to participate meaningfully in the legal process.

With training completed annually in forensic psychological assessment, I meet the legal and ethical standards required to conduct these evaluations in Texas criminal courts.

What Are Competency and Sanity Evaluations?

Competency to Stand Trial evaluations determine whether a defendant currently has the mental capacity to understand legal proceedings and assist in their own defense. This includes assessing the individual's:
-
Understanding of courtroom roles and procedures
-
Ability to communicate effectively with legal counsel
-
Present mental status and functional abilities

Sanity Evaluations, also referred to as Criminal Responsibility Evaluations, assess whether a defendant was legally insane at the time of the alleged offense. These evaluations explore:
-
Mental state at the time of the incident
-
Ability to understand the nature and wrongfulness of the behavior
-
Presence of any qualifying mental illness or intellectual disability

Both types of evaluations follow the guidelines outlined in the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and adhere to standards set forth by the Texas Health and Safety Code and professional psychological ethics.
How Referrals Work

I conduct evaluations by court appointment only, typically through a signed court order. Referrals are initiated by:
-
Criminal court judges
-
Prosecuting attorneys
-
Defense counsel

Once the order is received, I coordinate directly with the court, legal representatives, and correctional facilities to schedule the evaluation, whether in-person or virtual depending on the case.

What to Expect

Each evaluation includes:
-
A clinical interview and psychological assessment (if needed)
-
Review of relevant legal, medical, or mental health records
-
A comprehensive written report addressing the legal questions posed
-
Testimony, if requested by the court

I strive to provide clear, objective, and well-supported findings that assist the court in making legally sound decisions.
Service Areas
I accept court appointments throughout Texas and provide services via secure telehealth, depending on court and facility requirements.
